Diagnosis:

An Ayurvedic practitioner will assess the patient’s overall health, dosha imbalances, and specific symptoms to determine the suitability of Shirodhara. This therapy is particularly beneficial for those experiencing stress, anxiety, and sleep disturbances.

Procedure:

  • Preparation:

    • Selection of Liquid: Herbal oils, medicated milk, or other soothing liquids are chosen based on the patient’s dosha imbalances and health needs. Commonly used oils include sesame or coconut oil, often infused with calming herbs.
    • Preparation of the Patient: The patient lies down on a treatment table with their head positioned in a way that allows the liquid to flow smoothly over their forehead.
  • Administration:

    • Pouring: The chosen liquid is warmed to a comfortable temperature and continuously poured in a steady, rhythmic stream over the forehead. The flow of liquid is often directed from a special vessel or vessel-like apparatus.
    • Duration: The treatment typically lasts between 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the patient’s condition and tolerance. During this time, the patient may experience deep relaxation and mental calm.
    • Absorption: The liquid is allowed to be absorbed into the scalp and forehead, promoting a soothing effect on the nervous system and mind.
  • Post-Treatment Care:

    • Rest: The patient is advised to rest and avoid strenuous activities immediately following the treatment.
    • Hydration: Drinking plenty of water and following a balanced diet can support the overall benefits of Shirodhara.
    • Avoiding Stress: It is recommended to avoid stressful situations or activities immediately after the therapy to maintain the calming effects.
