  • Stiffness in the Knees: Difficulty in bending or straightening the knees, leading to restricted mobility.
  • Swelling and Inflammation: Swelling around the knee joint due to conditions like arthritis or injury.
  • Joint Degeneration: Symptoms of joint wear and tear, such as creaking sounds, pain during movement, and reduced joint flexibility.
  • Chronic Knee Disorders: Long-term knee conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or degenerative joint disease.

Causes Treated by Janudhara:

  • Vata Imbalance: Excess Vata dosha leading to joint dryness, stiffness, and pain, especially in conditions like osteoarthritis.
  • Kapha Imbalance: Accumulation of Kapha dosha causing swelling, inflammation, and stiffness in the joints, commonly seen in conditions like rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Degenerative Changes: Wear and tear of the cartilage and bones in the knee joint due to aging or overuse.
  • Injury or Trauma: Knee pain and inflammation caused by injury, sprain, or strain to the ligaments and tissues surrounding the knee joint.

Diagnosis:

An Ayurvedic practitioner will evaluate the patient’s knee condition, overall health, and dosha imbalances to determine the need for Janudhara. The treatment is typically recommended for chronic knee pain, joint stiffness, and other conditions affecting knee mobility.

Procedure:

  • Preparation (Purvakarma): Before Janudhara, the patient may undergo preparatory treatments such as Abhyanga (oil massage) and Swedana (herbal steam therapy) to relax the tissues and open the channels for better absorption of the medicated oil.

  • Administration:

    • The patient is seated or lies down in a comfortable position, exposing the knee joint.
    • Warm medicated oil or herbal decoction is poured continuously over the affected knee joint using a special vessel or dhara pot. The oil is allowed to flow gently and uniformly over the knee for a specified duration, usually 30 to 45 minutes per session.
    • The warmth of the oil helps in penetrating the deeper tissues, reducing pain, and alleviating stiffness.
  • Number of Sessions: The number of sessions varies depending on the severity of the condition. A typical course of treatment may range from 7 to 14 days, with daily or alternate-day sessions.

  • Post-Treatment Care: After the therapy, the knee is gently massaged to enhance the absorption of the medicated oil. The patient is advised to rest and avoid strain on the knee joint. Dietary and lifestyle recommendations may be provided to support the healing process.

Benefits:

  • Pain Relief: Janudhara provides immediate relief from knee pain by nourishing the joint tissues and reducing inflammation.
  • Improved Mobility: The therapy helps in easing joint stiffness, improving flexibility and movement in the knee.
  • Reduces Inflammation: The continuous flow of warm medicated oil helps reduce swelling and inflammation in the knee joint.
  • Strengthens Joints: Regular sessions of Janudhara help in strengthening the knee joint and preventing further degeneration of the cartilage and tissues.
  • Detoxification: The therapy promotes the removal of toxins (Ama) from the joint, enhancing overall joint health.
  • Relaxation and Stress Relief: The warmth of the oil and the soothing nature of the therapy also provide mental relaxation and relief from stress.

Precautions:

  • Medical Supervision: Janudhara should be performed under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner, especially for individuals with severe joint conditions or underlying health issues.
  • Not Suitable for Acute Injuries: This therapy is not recommended in the case of fresh injuries, fractures, or infections in the knee joint.
  • Post-Treatment Care: It is essential to follow the prescribed dietary and lifestyle changes to ensure the effectiveness of the treatment and prevent further damage to the knee.
