Basti is one of the most important therapies in Ayurveda, particularly effective for balancing Vata dosha (the element associated with movement and the nervous system). It involves administering medicated oils or herbal decoctions into the colon through enema. Basti helps cleanse the colon, remove toxins, nourish tissues, and restore balance to the body. This therapy is highly beneficial for treating various conditions, including digestive issues, arthritis, neurological disorders, and chronic constipation.
Our Experience
The need for Basti is determined based on a detailed assessment of the patient’s symptoms, dosha imbalance, and overall health. The Ayurvedic practitioner evaluates the patient’s digestive system, bowel habits, and general vitality to decide the appropriate type of Basti therapy.
Preparation (Purvakarma): Before the administration of Basti, the patient undergoes preparatory treatments like Abhyanga (oil massage) and Swedana (herbal steam therapy) to help mobilize toxins and relax the body.
Types of Basti:
Administration: The medicated oil or herbal decoction is administered into the rectum through a soft, flexible nozzle. The patient is asked to lie down comfortably during the procedure. The enema is retained for a specific duration, allowing the body to absorb the medicine and promote elimination of waste and toxins.
Post-Treatment Care: After the Basti treatment, the patient is advised to rest and follow a light, easily digestible diet. Hydration and avoiding strenuous activity are important to aid recovery.
