Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis, known as Sandhivata in Ayurveda, is a degenerative joint disease where the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of the bones wears down over time. It primarily affects the joints in the knees, hips, hands, and spine. As the most common form of arthritis, osteoarthritis can lead to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility, significantly impacting the quality of life.

Symptoms:

  • Joint pain during or after movement
  • Stiffness, particularly in the morning or after inactivity
  • Tenderness when applying light pressure to the joint
  • Loss of flexibility and reduced range of motion
  • Grating sensation or sound when moving the joint
  • Bone spurs, which feel like hard lumps, may form around the affected joint
  • Swelling in the affected area

Causes:

  • Aging: The risk of osteoarthritis increases with age due to the natural wear and tear of joints.
  • Joint injury: Injuries from sports or accidents can lead to osteoarthritis, even if they occurred many years ago.
  • Obesity: Excess weight puts additional stress on weight-bearing joints, especially the knees.
  • Genetics: A family history of osteoarthritis can increase the likelihood of developing the condition.
  • Joint overuse: Repetitive stress on a joint, common in certain jobs or sports, can contribute to the breakdown of cartilage.
  • Bone deformities: Some people are born with malformed joints or defective cartilage, which can increase the risk.

Diagnosis:

In Ayurveda, diagnosis involves a detailed examination of the patient’s lifestyle, diet, and medical history, along with a physical examination of the affected joints. Pulse diagnosis (Nadi Pariksha) is used to assess the imbalance in the doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha). Modern diagnostic tools such as X-rays or MRI scans may also be recommended to assess the extent of joint damage and rule out other conditions.

Treatment:

Ayurvedic treatment for osteoarthritis focuses on balancing the Vata dosha, which is often aggravated in this condition. The treatment plan may include:

  • Herbal Remedies: Anti-inflammatory herbs like Shallaki (Boswellia), Guggulu, and Ashwagandha are used to reduce pain and inflammation.
  • Panchakarma Therapy: Detoxification procedures like Abhyanga (oil massage), Snehana (oleation), and Virechana (therapeutic purgation) help in eliminating toxins and balancing the doshas.
  • Dietary Changes: A diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods, warm and easy-to-digest meals, and avoidance of Vata-aggravating foods like cold, dry, and processed items is recommended.
  • Yoga and Exercise: Gentle exercises and specific yoga asanas are advised to improve joint flexibility and strength without straining the joints.
  • Lifestyle Modifications: Stress management, adequate rest, and avoiding overuse of affected joints are crucial aspects of the treatment plan.
