This therapy involves the application of warm herbal boluses (pouches) filled with medicinal herbs, powders, or other therapeutic substances. The boluses are heated and then applied to the body using specific massage techniques. Diagnosis:

An Ayurvedic practitioner will assess the patient’s overall health, specific symptoms, and dosha imbalances to determine the suitability of Pottali Swedana. The therapy is particularly recommended for individuals suffering from chronic pain, stiffness, and inflammation in muscles and joints.

Procedure:

  1. Preparation (Purvakarma): The therapy may begin with Abhyanga (oil massage) to prepare the body and improve circulation. The herbal ingredients for the bolus are selected based on the patient’s condition and dosha imbalance.

  2. Administration:

    • The selected herbs, powders, or other therapeutic substances are tied into a bolus using a cloth, forming a pouch.
    • The boluses are heated by dipping them in warm medicated oil or herbal decoctions.
    • The warm boluses are then applied to the affected areas using gentle, rhythmic massage techniques. The heat and medicinal properties of the herbs penetrate deeply into the tissues, providing relief from pain and stiffness.
    • The boluses are periodically reheated during the session to maintain their therapeutic warmth.
  3. Number of Sessions: The number of sessions varies depending on the severity of the condition, typically ranging from 7 to 14 days, with daily or alternate-day treatments.

  4. Post-Treatment Care: After Pottali Swedana, the patient is advised to rest and avoid exposure to cold or strain. Dietary and lifestyle modifications may be recommended to enhance the benefits of the therapy.
